The War of Lost Hearts Trilogy
Carissa Broadbent is currently one of my favorite authors. She does a beautiful job creating worlds you can immerse yourself in. Her writing is beautiful and allows for a lot of character development and growth. You can’t help but empathize with her characters (who are perfectly imperfect). Broadbent writes in first person perspective, but often offers multiple points of view, giving insight to different sides of the same story. She currently has two series available for readers, The War of Lost Hearts Trilogy and The Crowns of Nyaxia series.
It is important to know that her books are graphic. Each of her books contains graphic sexual scenes and violence. Because of this she often adds a list of trigger warning at the beginning of her work.
Broadbent is very involved with her fans, interacting with the often on her socials and providing fanart and behind the scenes information.
What is it?
While Broadbent’s series The Crowns of Nyaxia is more well-known, The War of Lost Hearts Trilogy is arguably better. Broadbent has said that this was her passion project and the reason she was able to become a full-time author. This series is full of twists, turns, heartbreak, tension, and emotional trauma. It offers multiple points of view that will have you sympathizing with the villains.
The War of Lost Hearts Trilogy follows the story of a magic wielding slave, Tisaanah. After her attempt to purchase her freedom goes terribly wrong, she flees to the Orders (a powerful organization of magic wielders) to hone her powers and hopefully free her people. Before she can be accepted into the Orders she must first complete an apprenticeship with fire-wielding Maxantarius, a grumpy, broody recluse who wants nothing to do with the Orders.
How do I read it?
Unlike many other romantasy series, The War of Lost Hearts Trilogy has no confusing reading order. The series consists of three books: Daughter of No Worlds, Children of Fallen Gods, and Mother of Death and Dawn. These books are read in publication order and follow the same plot. The second book, Children of Fallen Gods, contains a lot of world building that is crucial for the remainder of the story. All three books are currently available through kindle unlimited.
There is also a prelude series available, but Broadbent has made statements saying that if you have not read it yet, to wait as it is going to be revamped.
You can also receive the prequel story, The Ashen Son, for free by joining Carissa Broadbent’s newsletter through her website. However, this a four-part series with one part currently available.
Is it spicy?
Yes. All of Broadbent’s books contain some level of spice. However, this story is more plot heavy. It follows romance and has spicy chapters, but the main focus of this story is the plot (think Throne of Glass).
Why will I love it?
Grumpy, broody MMC
Slow burn
Awesome world-building
Fey (in later books)
Unique magic system
So much tension
