Long Book Series to Get Lost In
Short books are cool, but there is something really fun about living in new worlds for extended periods of time. If you’re like me you LOVE when a series is long and there is no rush to leave. Here is a list of popular book series that you can stay in for a while.
1. Harry Potter by JK Rowling
It may seem obvious, but a great place to start if you’re looking for a long, immersive series is Harry Potter. It’s 7 books long, easy to read, and appropriate for most ages. You’re never too old to return to Hogwarts, or go there for the very first time! Plus, if you don’t own it already, the entire series is available on Kindle Unlimited.
If 7 books isn’t enough for you there are other (shorter) books available in this world. The Hogwarts Library (The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Quidditch Through the Ages, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) is a great way to keep children engaged in the world. While if you are looking to learn more about your favorite, older characters Short Stories from Hogwarts is a collections of short stories written by JK Rowling and is a short and fun read.
2. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Outlander is a romance series about time travel. A WWII nurse is mysteriously transported back in time to 18th century Scotland. Throughout the series our main couple James Fraser and Claire Randall find themselves involved in important historical conflicts while facing tragedies of their own. (And it’s also a hit tv show). The main series currently has 9 of 10 books. While the spinoff series, the Lord John Gray series, has 4 books. There are also several novellas.
You can find an appropriate reading order for the series on the author’s website here.
3. Dune by Frank Herbert
The original Dune series by Frank Herbert consists of 6 novels, which is already a rather long series. However, after his death in 1986, Herbert’s son Brian Herbert and science fiction author Kevin J Anderson collaborated to continue the series. Together they wrote an additional 17 books in the series.
4. The Cosmere by Brandon Sanderson
The Cosmere is a fictional universe created by fantasy author Brandon Sanderson. It consists of several series (Mistborn Eras 1 & 2 and The Stormlight Archive), standalones, novellas, and a graphic novel. Currently there are 14 full length novels included in the Cosmere. A reading guide for the series can be found on the author’s website (both written and video). He suggests several different starting points based on your reading preferences and experiences. Check out the reading starting points here!
5. The Maasverse by Sarah J Maas
The Maasverse is the name for the three interconnected series by author Sarah J Maas. It includes A Court of Thorns and Roses (currently 4 books and a novella), Throne of Glass (8 book complete series), and Crescent City (currently 4 books). You can choose to read A Court of Thorns and Roses first if you prefer romance or Throne of Glass first if you prefer plot, but it is generally agreed that Crescent City should be read last. There is a ton of debate online on the reading order of Throne of Glass, however, you can find the author’s suggestions here.
