French toast is a family favorite for breakfast. It’s delicious, sweet, and so easy to make. Enjoy this classic french toast recipe that is ready in less than 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (add more to your liking)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 slices of bread (consider using thicker slices and stale bread)
  • Butter for frying

Optional Toppings:

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh berries
  • Sliced bananas
  • Whipped Cream
  • Honey
  • Nuts (such as pecans or almonds)

Instructions

1. Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a small amount of butter ( you can use oil or cooking spray if preferred) to the pan and allow it to melt and coat the surface evenly.

2. While the griddle is heating, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt. Make sure the mixture is well combined; it should look creamy.

3. Dip each slice of bread in the mixture. Make sure you saturate the entire slice without soaking the bread. Do not let the bread become too soggy.

4. Place the saturated bread slices or the warmed griddle. Cook each slice for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to adjust the heat slightly to prevent burning.

5. Once cooked, transfer the french toast slices to a plate. Complete this dish with your favorite toppings. Some favorite toppings include syrup, powdered sugar, nuts, or fruits.

6. East french toast alone or serve with other breakfast classics, such as, eggs, bacon, sausage, and hashbrowns.

Tips for Perfect French Toast

  • Use Stale Bread: Slightly stale or day-old bread works best for French toast as it absorbs the mixture better while preventing the bread from falling apart. If your bread is fresh, toast it lightly before soaking.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Cook in batches if necessary. Overcrowding can lower the pan’s temperature and result in soggy French toast.
  • Customize the Flavor: Experiment with different spices, such as nutmeg, for a unique twist on the classic recipe.
  • Keep It Warm: Keep the cooked French toast warm in an oven set to 200°F (93°C) while you finish cooking the rest.
