Children’s Halloween Book Review: Ghost Says Meow

Fourth of July has passed and the summer days are becoming increasingly hotter. The long sunny days have me longing for shorter days, cooler nights, and autumn colors. I am so very ready for autumn to come. So in the spirit of moving past summer, I have found another Halloween book for your children to enjoy.

Ghost Says Meow by Lauren Kukla is a cute Halloween story aimed for younger children. The skeleton says, “crackle”. The witch cackles. But what if the ghost doesn’t want to say “BOO”? Ghost Says Meow is a cute story about a ghost that is bored saying “BOO” and wants to have fun and make whatever noises he wants.

The images are simple and colorful and add to the story, making it easier for young listeners or readers to understand. The colors are vibrant, interesting, and fit well with the theme of the story.

The words and sentences are clear and easy to understand. They have a nice rhythm that young children will find engaging and entertaining.

Because the story is about sounds, there is tons of fun to be had making the sounds of the creatures in the book. The story also offers plenty of opportunity to have conversation.

What can your child learn from this story? – It’s ok to be different and be yourself.

Ghost Says Meow releases in September 2025. If you like this book be sure to check out other books by the author.
