Books I wish I’d Read Sooner: The Warlord Chronicles

The Warlord Chronicles is a three-part story consisting of the books The Winter King, Enemy of God, and Excalibur written by author Bernard Cornwell. Cornwell’s blend of meticulous historical research and compelling storytelling transforms the familiar legends of Arthur, Merlin, Guinevere, and the Knights of the Round Table into a gritty, realistic portrayal of Dark Age Britain focused on religion, superstition, and politics rather than magic.

The Warlord Chronicles is told from the perspective of aged monk Derfel, former warrior and perpetual friend to the legendary Arthur. Derfel is set the task of writing the true story of Arthur, opposed to the magical tale told by the singers and poets (much to the disappointment of his patron). Through his eyes, readers are drawn into a world where tribal loyalties clash, and the old ways of the druids are threatened by the encroaching forces of Christianity.

What makes this trilogy so compelling is the amount of research and detail provided by the author. Cornwell excels and transporting the reader to a different time. He describes in great detail the sounds, sights, and smells of the setting. He takes care to include religion and superstition and does not shy away from the more gruesome aspects of the time. Cornwell’s description of the battlefield transports the reader into the great shield wall clashes and hand-to-hand combat.

Originally published between 1995 and 1997, I wish I had found these books sooner. I am excited to read other books by this author.
