What is it?
Heir of Twisted Lies by LJ Andrews is the second and final book in the Stonegate Duology. The first book, Broken Souls and Bones, is already available. Heir of Twisted Lies is a gory, romantasy set in a viking inspired world. It is perfect for readers of the genre who a need a break from fae and dragons.
However, it is dark. Definitely check your triggers before diving into this world. A list of trigger warnings is provided at the beginning of the book so that you may decide if it is a good fit for you.
This is a duology, however, if you love it and want to know more about Roark’s background, the author, LJ Andrews, is releasing an independently published novella titled When Fate is Cruel on January 22 of this year. This book contains two novellas, one from this world and one from her Ever Seas world. It is definitely worth reading if you already love this duology.
There is definitely room for expansion into this world. So, while this is technically a duology, there is always the chance that LJ Andrews will write more books following different character perspectives.
*** This is a fantasy romance book intended for adults. It may not be suitable for all readers. Be sure to check the trigger warnings provided by the author to determine if the book is a good fit for you.

Lyra Bien never expected to leave the royal house at Stonegate in one piece after her rare melder magic was revealed. Once she discovered the truth behind the need for her magic and the brutality of her kingdom, Lyra vowed to put an end to the corruption of the crown. But is the enemy of her enemy her friend? Lyra must put her trust in the man who stole her heart . . . then deceived her.
Roark Ashwood rose through the ranks to become Sentry of Stonegate and personal guard to the prince, despite being born of the enemy clan, the Dravens. But in a single heartbeat he destroyed his ruthless reputation all to save Lyra. With his true identity unveiled, Roark revealed years of plotting and betrayal to everyone he loves.
As Roark’s two lives collide, he must fight to protect the woman he loves and outsmart those throughout the kingdoms who want his power for themselves. Lyra must wade through long-kept secrets, rising battles, and vicious court intrigue—all while keeping her feelings for Roark at bay.
What I did like?
It’s definitely hard to discuss this book without spoiling the first book. Because the first book ends with a plot twist and cliffhanger. The series as a whole is filled with so many plot twists and turns. It will definitely keep you on your toes.
I loved learning about the magic system in this book. It is a little bit different from magic systems I have read in past books. It is based on the body. People have the ability to meld bones together, break a person about and cause immense pain, and tear souls apart. It is quite gory at times, so if you do not like dark fantasy- this book may not be for you. However, I love dark fantasy and found the magic and how the characters chose to use it very interesting.
I loved that this book wasn’t what I expected it to be. I went into this fully prepared for it to be 400 pages of miscommunication (which is one of my least favorite book tropes). The miscommunication in this book is resolved early on and allowed the book to move forward and focus on the plot.
I found the dynamic between Lyra, Roark, and Skul Drek to be very interesting. I loved the idea that Skul Drek was the worst parts of Roark’s soul.
I also loved learning about Roark’s past- how his soul was split and how he lost his voice.
The story itself was a little slow for me. I do definitely like other books by the author more, but overall I really enjoyed this duology and would definitely read it again. The novella, When Fate is Cruel, explores this story in more depth.
