Nonfiction Children’s Book Review: Sloths

Buy on Amazon

Sloths by Laura Stickney is a leveled decodable book. What is a decodable book? Decodable books are designed for young and emerging readers. They are phonics based books that usually focus on a letter combination or digraphs for children to practice and become familiar with. They are great practice for (as the name suggests) decoding words and practicing reading skills.

As a decodable book, Sloths focuses on the reading skills rather than the information provided. If you are looking for a book that will teach your child immense information about sloths, this is not the book for you. It provides only the most basic information about this creature. If you are looking for a book to help your child practice their reading comprehension and skills, this book is a great fit!

Sloths provides awesome pictures of sloths to engage your young reader while allowing opportunity for discussion. The words are easy to read and understand. Each page has approximately 1-2 short sentences and large font. This is great to avoid that feeling of being overwhelmed while beginning reading. This book focuses on the digraph “th” which is found frequently throughout.

If you’ve ever purchased a decodable reader for your child you’ll know that they often do not have much information. This book is very easy and is not for children that have been reading for a while.
