What is Metal Slinger?

Metal Slinger is Rachel Schneider’s breakout romantasy book, having originally published romances. It is the first book of the Fire & Metal duology. Currently, only the first book is available. While the author is actively working on book number 2, there is currently no information about its release date. You may want to keep this in mind if you don’t like starting unfinished series as Metal Slinger ends on an insane cliffhanger.

Metal Slinger Official Blurb

Summarizing Metal Slinger would only ruin the many surprises. Instead, here is the official blurb provided for the book.

“Even though she’s not one of them, Brynn has spent her life among the Alaha, training to be a guard and waiting for the chance to attend the annual market hosted by the Kenta–the very same people who exiled her adopted community to a life at sea. Going to the market is a rite of passage eagerly anticipated by all young guards, but Brynn does not anticipate breaking a century-long peace treaty while there. Nor does she plan for the intense encounter with an enemy soldier that now threatens to unwind the fragile coexistence between their people–and everything Brynn once believed about herself to be true.

Brynn’s loyalty to the Alaha is tested when the truth of who she is is brought to light by this soldier who’s taken an oath to bring her back to where she belongs. Narrowly escaping death on the violent high seas, Brynn’s connection to the Alaha is further tested when she learns about the world of magic she’s been denied. She was once certain of her fate and where she belonged, but the dark, knowing eyes of this stranger have her questioning everything, including her heart.”

What did I like about the book?

*** Contains minor spoilers.

I really enjoyed the majority of this book. Was it completely new and unique? No. Was it unique and intriguing enough that it kept my interest? Absolutely. I couldn’t book this book down. This book was full of twists and turns. Particularly because the main character has no memory of her childhood, so we have to learn about her and her world along with her which I found so interesting. The FMC, Brynn, is strong and independent (yet still dependent), but not arrogant in the way that FMCs often are in the genre. I enjoyed her character very much instead of just tolerating her. The MMC Acker was so fun and reminded me a lot of Dorian (if you’ve read Throne of Glass). I loved the relationship between the two characters. The chemistry between them felt natural and comfortable.

What I loved most about this book was how it was able to stay interesting. It really had the potential to be a boring book. A large chunk of this book was spent with the two main characters stranded on a boat in the middle of the ocean, and yet, this was my favorite part. The entire book felt like a mystery that needed to be solved.

What did I not like?

*** While I tried my best not to include spoilers, it does contain my reaction to the infamous plot twist.

I finished this book about 24 hours ago. And it left me flabbergasted. I’m still trying to sort through my feelings about this book. I feel confused, betrayed, and lied to. I cannot stop thinking about it.

The only thing I knew about this book going in was that it had a crazy plot twist. I enjoyed the book as a whole, but honestly, the plot twist ruined the book for me a little bit. It felt like it made no sense to the story and was added for shock purposes. It contradicted everything that had happened previously in the story. It left me wondering if I did not read closely enough or if it simply did not fit. And, so I will 100% be rereading this again before the next book comes out. Because I will definitely be reading the next book and am hoping desperately that it contains the answers that I need.

This book has put me in a reading slump that I do not know how to get out of.
