2. The Broken Kingdoms Series by LJ Andrews

The Broken Kingdoms Series is a (loose) fairy tale retelling including Vikings and magic. These are dark romantic fantasy books with varying levels of spice and contain a list of trigger warnings. Books 1-3 are a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Books 4-6 are a Cinderella retelling. Books 7 and 8 are a Swan Princess retelling. Book 9 is a retelling of Phantom of the Opera. Each group of books follows the story of a different couple and a battle for a different kingdom in the same world. However, it is important to read the books in order as the stories are intertwined.

If you decide you want more of this world, you can read The Ever Seas Series (also on Kindle Unlimited). This is a second generation series set in the same world, but this one is about fae pirates!

3. The Shepherd King Duology by Rachel Gillig

The Shepherd King Duology is a complete series. There are two books: One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns. This is a plot driven gothic romantic fantasy.

The first book follows an escaped slave, Tisaanah, who is desperate to join the magic guilds, perfect her magic skills, and free the rest of her people. The only person who can help her? Maxantarius Farlione. A grumpy ex-warrior who hates the guilds and would rather be doing anything else.
